Artist Statement
The Good People started on a napkin, as where many good ideas come from. My work consists of characters that perhaps should be in distress or agony, but look content with what's happening around them and what they are doing. These pieces are populated by intrusive thoughts and the possibilities from overthinking. The characters and the world they are a part of live in the unsettling and intrusiveness of one's mind, while some are just part of the weird and unnatural. They are not exactly right and may scare others, but in reality they are friendly people/creatures not knowing fully what's considered wrong or disturbing. Reality becomes distorted in this world, tvs now have bodies, the frogs are smoking cigarettes, one guy can’t trust worms. They are all in their own bubble, content with the world and want to be friends, they just don’t understand how weird they are. Other creations within The Good People could just be things done in my specific art style I have developed.
I bring this world to life using 2D and 3D methods. Most characters start as a drawing, I then use these as silkscreen prints for clothing, or ideas for 3D objects. I use digital modeling programs such as Zbrush and Rhino to model the character or part of one to be made into a 3D object. I 3D print, laser cut, vinyl cut, and CNC mill various materials and combine them to create a physical object. Using different fabrication techniques like sanding, filling, and painting, I can bring these parts to life and make more complex objects, figures, sculptures, clothing, or jewelry.
I have branded my style of art with The Good People. Using various materials and mediums allows for diversity, more experience, and playfulness of mixed media to see my figures in different forms. Not confining myself into one medium lets me explore and experiment with how I can show and create my ideas that will be forever developing.
